My name is Lacey. I grew up in a small, culturally limited town in Utah where most people were conservative and followed a certain lifestyle. Not that it was terrible; it actually motivated me to seek out info, photos, and artwork of other cultures. I love all kinds of artwork and have always drawn and painted even since I could hold a pencil. My mother and grandmother are also artists. That passion for art , through I was never formally trained is any out school, led me to the discovery of body modifications. While I appreciate all of the symbolism of piercings, branding, scarification, etc. it was always the tattooing that stood out to me. The idea of the skin almost transforming into whatever image you desire appeals to me. A blending of some physical pain with the desire of your soul to be permanently marked, along with some mental control, makes you feel very alive .
I got my first tattoo when I was 17 years old and I saw a woman tattooing in the shop. The simple act of seeing her there really inspired me. When I was 19 yrs. Old I began an apprenticeship in a professional shop. That sounds easier than it really was. I was rejected by a lot of artists and then I just got lucky. I’m 28 now and have worked in a few different shops, which is a good thing for me because I am very inspired when I’m around difference artists with different styles. That way I will never stop learning new things. And that’s what I think life’s really all about; learning new things so you r soul can grow and evolve into the person and artist you know you can be. Tattooing for me is really a creative outlet. I feel a bit empowered by doing them and getting them. I do not claim to be the best artist or tattoo artist, I never will be. All I can do is be my best on that day for that person.
